The injunction that prevented the start of the so-called Summer Operation in Rio de Janeiro was suspended and the action should begin this weekend, according to information provided by the state Military Police this Saturday (14).
The operation has been the target of criticism since last year due to the apprehension of minors, mostly black boys. Last week, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall said it would begin the operation, but an injunction from the Court of Justice suspended the action.
According to the Court, the action was suspended due to the absence of representatives from the Rio City Hall in a project planning meeting which, according to the judicial body, is actually aimed at approaching adolescents. This is the injunction that ended up being suspended.
According to the Military Police, the operation aims to guarantee the safety of residents and tourists in the region and will be carried out by around 1,250 military police officers daily starting this Saturday (14).
The focus of the operation is the coastline of the capital and coastal cities of Rio, as well as expressways and highways providing access to municipalities with the highest tourist flow. Patrols will be concentrated in the area between Leme and Pontal, in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, and will involve the use of horses from the Mounted Police Regiment (RPMont) and dogs from the Canine Action Battalion (BAC).
Policing along the coastline will be carried out on public roads with the help of vehicles and motorcycles, as well as quad bikes on the sand.
On the beaches with the most activity, the PM states that there will be tents as support points for the police and a reference for the population.
Regarding the streets of the neighborhoods in the south and west of the capital, the PM emphasizes that policing of the structural corridors providing access to the coast will be reinforced by police officers from RECOM (Special Patrols and Crowd Control) and BPVE (Expressway Policing Battalion).
Buses traveling towards the coast will be monitored and, according to the police, if any actions that could jeopardize public transport safety are noticed, the vehicles may be intercepted. There will also be actions at bus terminals and subway stations.
