Operation Summer records another death in Baixada Santista; total reaches 55

A man died after an alleged confrontation with military police in São Vicente, in the early hours of Thursday (28). With this additional death recorded, the number of deaths since the beginning of Operation Verão, launched almost two months ago in Baixada Santista, reaches 55.

According to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the police team was carrying out a security patrol near Vila Nossa Senhora, when they were informed that three armed individuals were in the Dique do Piçarro region, a favela in the region. .

According to the SSP report, when the agents arrived at the scene, they were greeted by gunfire and reacted. At the time of the action, two men reportedly managed to escape. However, one of the suspects was later located in a property. A new confrontation would have started, the man was shot and did not resist.

The suspect had his weapon seized and the police team called forensics to the scene. The SSP also says that all circumstances relating to the facts will be investigated.

In less than 24, two deaths were recorded

On the afternoon of this Wednesday (27), a man, still unidentified, died after being shot in an alleged confrontation with police officers, in the Vila Júlia neighborhood, in Guarujá.

According to the SSP, the police were checking a property during an action in the community to combat drug trafficking, when they found the armed suspect. The man and the police team reportedly clashed, but the suspect was shot and died at the scene.

The weapon the man was carrying was collected and several quantities of drugs were seized at the scene.

Operation Summer is still in force in Baixada Santista and has already reached its third phase. According to public security, the objective of the action is to stifle organized crime in the region. The operation was launched after the death of military police officer Wesley Cosmo, in early February.

According to the balance released by the ministry, since the beginning of the action, 1,038 criminals have been arrested, including 425 wanted by the courts. Additionally, around 2.5 tons of drugs were collected and 118 illegal weapons were seized.

Since the beginning of the administration of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), the Military Police launched two operations that became the second and third deadliest in the state's history.

The first, Operation Shield, was launched on July 27, 2023 and ended in September with 28 deaths. The action ranks third among the most lethal operations of the São Paulo Military Police, behind only the Carandiru massacre in 1992. Operation Verão, launched this year, ranks second in the lethality ranking, with 54 deaths.

Both operations were launched after the death of military police officers in the Baixada Santista region.
