Operation Verão, launched by São Paulo security forces, in Baixada Santista, has already left 20 suspects dead in clashes with the police, according to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP).
The twentieth death is that of a man, killed this past Sunday (11), after a confrontation with military police, in Baixada Santista. According to the SSP, portions of narcotics were found next to the suspect.
In a note, the ministry also reported that the case occurred while military police were on patrol in the region. During the patrol, they suspected a man riding a bicycle who, upon noticing the police approaching, pulled out a gun and shot at the officers. The man would, however, have hit the vehicle. In reaction, the police shot the suspect.
He was taken to a health unit, but did not survive. The civil police requested expertise at the scene and are continuing investigations into the case.
Baixada Santista remains under tension
Since the death of Rota soldier Samuel Wesley Cosmo, aged 35, on the 2nd, Baixada Santista has concentrated the majority of cases of police clashes. The last death that had been recorded occurred last Saturday night (10), in which a 36-year-old man was also killed after being shot by Rota police officers.
According to the SSP, the Military and Civil Police launched the third phase of Operation Summer last Wednesday (7).
“The operation is reinforced by police officers from battalions from different regions, from Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (Rota) and the Special Operations Command (COE). At the same time, the second phase of the operation is underway, focusing on actions to combat crimes on the coast during the season and also during the Carnival holiday”, reports the ministry in a note.
Also according to the SSP, from the beginning of Operation Summer until last Monday (12), 589 people were detained, including 214 wanted by the courts.
All cases continue with investigations coordinated by the 3rd Homicide Police Station of Deic de Santos, with monitoring by the Public Ministry and the Judiciary.
