Operation Summer: the number of deaths in clashes with police on the coast of SP reaches 30

The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat confirmed, this Tuesday (20), that the number of deaths in clashes with the police during Operation Summer, carried out by the Military Police in Baixada Santista, on the coast of the state, rose to 30.

On Monday (19), a man died in a confrontation with the police in Morro São Bento, in the city of Santos. Police officers were patrolling the region when they saw the suspect with a backpack. During the attempted approach, the man pulled out a gun and got into a physical fight with the police, who reacted and shot him.

The man was taken to the emergency room, but did not survive. According to the SSP, the suspect had been a fugitive from justice since January 2022 for the crime of drug trafficking, and drugs, cell phones and a precision scale were found with him. The weapon used by the man was stolen from a military police officer.

Another man also died after clashing with police officers on Tuesday afternoon (20). According to the secretariat, the case took place on Rua Cananéia, in the Saboó neighborhood, in Santos. The man fled an attempted approach and hid in a house. According to police, the man shot at the officers, who returned fire. The boy was rescued by the Emergency Medical Care Service (SAMU) at the Santos Central Emergency Care Unit (UPA), but he could not resist and died.

The secretariat reported that the weapons used by military police officers in the action were seized. A .380 caliber pistol with a scratched number was seized from the suspect, as well as 490 portions of marijuana, 616 portions of crack, 205 portions of cocaine, a radio transmitter and a cell phone.

The case was registered in the 5th Police District of Santos as a death resulting from police intervention, location/seizure of an object, unauthorized or illegal drugs and attempted murder.

Since the beginning of Operation Summer in Baixada Santista, according to the secretariat, the police have arrested 706 criminals, including 261 wanted by the courts. 509 kilos of drugs and 81 illegal weapons, including restricted-use rifles, were also seized.

Among the 30 killed in clashes with the police is also Rodrigo Pires dos Santos, known as Danone, identified as leader of a criminal faction involved in international drug trafficking, money laundering, criminal courts and attacks on public agents.
