This Thursday (7), the Civil Police of Goiás carries out an operation to execute 100 judicial warrants, for temporary arrest and search and seizure, against a group suspected of carrying out the so-called “new number scam”. According to investigations, the gang generated approximately R$7.1 million in one year of activity.
This is the second phase of Operation Panitere, which has the support of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, through the 12th DP (Copacabana).
The investigations began after the blow suffered by the mother of model Caroline Trentini. The scammers pretended to be the celebrity during an exchange of messages and deceived her elderly mother, saying that the number used by the criminals would be the new contact number of the victim’s daughter. With the scam, the group managed to secure a deposit of R$125,000.
In the first phase of the operation, six people were arrested.
The police then discovered a large criminal network made up, in large part, of ex-convicts. The group carried out the scam on victims across the country, managing to obtain R$7.1 million in a period of approximately one year. In total, 47 people are targets of today’s action.
In this operation, according to the police, targets are not only the group’s leaders, but also the head responsible for social engineering deceiving the victim, the supplier of the victim database (grids), the bank account recruiters, those responsible for providing accounts to receive the values from the victims and also those responsible for providing second-level pass accounts to hide the illicit origin of the values.

Like thousands of Brazilians, Carol Trentini’s mother was the victim of a scam on WhatsApp. The criminal pretended to be the model and convinced her mother to make bank transfers.
“This story still affects my family a lot. It’s very sad. I was in a delicate phase of grief, and they took advantage of it. The criminals are extremely professional, they talked to my mother the same way I talk,” said Carol, during an interview broadcast in May 2022 by On Profit CNN .
The model stated that the money lost in the fraud was from the sale of her parents’ house, and that the scam not only caused financial loss, but also psychological trauma. “It was my mother and father’s money for a lifetime. Thank God, today we don’t lack anything, but many people lack food on the table”, he said.
After the episode, the model and her family became increasingly suspicious. To protect herself, she said she never makes any decision without seeing or hearing the person first: “Nothing is so urgent that I can’t wait.”
