REN, Portugal’s electricity operator, denied that it stated that a rare atmospheric phenomenon was the cause of the blackout that also affected Spain on Monday (28).
Earlier, around 11:10 am (Brasília time), the Reuters news agency published a report stating that REN had attributed the interruption of energy supply to a rare phenomenon.
Hours later, however, the Portuguese operator clarified Reuters herself that she had not made such a statement.
In a statement sent to CNN Portugal “Ren denies categorically the anonymous source information placed to circulate on behalf of the company, which is estimated that the normalization of energy supply to the country may take a week.”
In the note initially disclosed, Reuters cited Ren saying that “interruptions in the supply of electricity in Portugal resulted from a failure in the Spanish power grid, related to a rare atmospheric phenomenon”. After the denial, the agency withdrew the content from the air, although its warnings on the subject can still be found in the company’s system.

“REN reaffirms that it is already proceeding to operations to reenergize the national electrical system, whose progress is giving public knowledge, through its official channels. All information prevention from other sources must be disregarded,” said the Portuguese operator.
Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that so far it is not possible to determine the cause of blackout.
Authorities also discarded the hypothesis of a cyber attack.
