Operators offering 5G will face municipal challenges, says economist

Last Friday (5), the auction for the exploration of 5G in Brazil ended, which defined which companies may offer the new technology to Brazilians. In an interview with CNN, the economist and specialist in economic regulation, Luiz Henrique Barbosa, spoke about the challenges that operators will have to implement 5G in the country.

For him, the main challenge is local. “We have companies with the structure, but the density of antennas is much higher, about five times greater than that of previous technologies. For that, it is necessary to have a relationship with the municipalities, and this is a slow and difficult process”, he said.

Barbosa also said that even with the General Antenna Law, which sought to standardize the requirements for the implementation of infrastructure in the country, there are many variables. “It’s an effort that the sector made in 2015 because it was always difficult to implement a structure. With 5,570 municipalities, we have 5,570 different possibilities”, he said.

The expert says that Brazilian legislation is another challenge. “Unfortunately, Brazil is late. With a law that cannot be complied with, companies end up going to court and requesting preliminary injunctions in order to be granted permission to implement the structure. Other countries are aware that telecommunications help with local development”, he stated.

The goal of Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency) is that by July 2022 all capitals in the country have 5G coverage.

“The auction was designed so that the large established operators are committed to covering the big cities, and the regional operators are committed to the smaller cities,” said Barbosa.

As for the cost to the end user, the expert stated that “the trend is to meet current prices” and that in five years it will be possible that most of Brazil will already have 5G coverage.

“To this day we have places where we don’t have adequate mobile telephony. Due to the fact that we have competition and operators focused on some goals, we believe that in five years we will have this mature technology available to the entire population”, he said.
