Oppo has announced the latest version of its sub-screen camera technology, claiming that it allows the selfie camera to be placed under the display “without compromising screen integrity.” Unlike earlier solutions, which reduced the pixel density in the part of the screen that covers the camera to let in more light, Oppo uses smaller pixels to maintain the same 400ppi density as the rest of the OLED panel.
As a result, according to Oppo, users should notice “almost no visual difference between the sub-screen camera area and the rest of the screen during day-to-day use.” The company showed off an image of a prototype phone with an e-book reader app. For the first smartphones with a sub-screen camera, this is the worst case scenario in which the camera area is clearly visible.
As for the quality of the camera itself, here’s a snapshot provided by Oppo:
Oppo has been working on under-display cameras for a long time, showing off the first prototype at MWC Shanghai in 2019. There is still no information on the release date of a commercial Oppo smartphone with such a camera.
