Opportunities for automation in the State are sought by the Information Society

Of Costa Ketsietzis

The Ministry of Digital Governance with the Information Society (IS SA) is considering the introduction of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to announce for this purpose a competition for the appointment of a consultant who will explore the opportunities that exist in the Public Sector.

Robotic Process Automation-RPA is a business process automation technology that allows the automation of repetitive manual tasks that rely heavily on rules.

The goal is to introduce RPA systems that will help public organizations save time and free up resources by automating manual and repetitive tasks, improving speed, accuracy, and reducing the risk of human error.

By using them, employees can focus on higher value tasks, automating repetitive tasks, while significant money savings can be achieved by extending the lifespan of existing information systems.

Through the introduction of this technology, the Greek State can improve its performance in relevant indicators of efficiency and effectiveness.

In the context of the wider digital transformation project, the object of the project is the implementation of a study to identify the most suitable areas for automation of the general public using robotic process automation (RPA) technology, cost-benefit analysis of interventions and training a roadmap with clear priorities.

The existence of the automation roadmap is estimated to maximize the results of planned actions such as the framework agreement for the modernization of the Government Cloud Computing (GCloud).

According to the tender announcement, for the preparation of the roadmap for automation, the candidate areas for automation of the State will be identified first, using, among other things, international practices and analysis of quantitative data, which will then be further studied to assess the projected benefit. the possible robotic automation, the degree of implementation difficulty and their classification into priority categories with specific implementation objectives.

The budget of the project is 558,000 euros, including VAT, the funding comes from National Resources and the duration of the contract is estimated at eight months.

What is RPA?

But what is RPA and why is it at the heart of IT trends? At its core it is nothing more than a technology that creates “digital robots”.

Just as a robotic arm performs automated tasks on a production line, so does this “digital worker” perform tasks normally performed by an office worker.

The advantages offered by the “digital robot” are again similar to those of the normal robot. Cost reduction, elimination of human error, operation 24 hours a day, release of human resources from repetitive work of low productivity etc. In fact, many digital robots can work on a computer at the same time, turning it into a “digital factory”.

“Digital robots” are not new. They have been around for years in many aspects of our daily lives. Take electronic payments for example:

When making a purchase with a card, the control of the credit limit or the available balance, the debiting of the consumer’s account and the credit of the amount to the supplier is not done manually but with a series of “digital robots”.

RPA technology finds application in almost every business activity, involving repetitive tasks. From tracking an order, or creating and sending a personal message to a company subscriber and entering and managing data to track accounts and complete financial statements. In fact, if the technologies of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are included in the equation, the possibilities are essentially infinite.

All companies – IT giants from Google and Microsoft to Salesforce and Oracle – have entered the “game” of limited code automation.

It is worth noting that the Greek Softomotive, which was acquired in 2020 by Microsoft and now functions as a hub of the technology giant for the specific technologies, is also active in the RPA sector.
