Opportunity for those who need a transplant is the same for everyone in Brazil, says ABTO president

The organ transplant program in Brazil is a source of pride, in addition to being the largest public service of its kind in the world.

This is the assessment of the president of the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplantation (ABTO) Gustavo Fernandes Ferreira.

A CNN Radio in Correspondente Médico, he explained that “every Brazilian has the same opportunity to undergo a transplant.”

“Regardless of the origin, color or funding source of the transplant, which brings transparency to the program”, he added.

Today, there are almost 66,000 Brazilians in line for a transplant – like the presenter Fausto Silva, who is hospitalized waiting for a heart.

“Today we have 70% of Brazilians who say they are donors, but the family needs to consent when death happens. 49% end up denying the donation”, he warned.

According to Gustavo, in addition to the need for those who choose to donate organs to talk to family members, “the most important thing is information, showing the importance of organ donation.”

“There are people waiting for the chance to continue living, we need to demonstrate that the system in Brazil works”, he added.

There is a single list of transplants, which is subdivided by region, as there is enough time for the removal of the organ to be donated until it reaches the person who should receive it.

The patient’s blood type and clinical conditions are also broken down.

From this, the greater the compatibility, the higher the priority.

Organ donation can only happen in the case of brain death, which has “modern methods to prove it.”

On average, Brazil has 19 donors per million inhabitants.

For comparison, Spain has 42 per million.
