Opposition candidate asks TSE to reconsider and observe elections in Venezuela

One of the Venezuelan opposition presidential candidates, Antonio Ecarri, asked this Tuesday (4) that the Superior Electoral Court of Brazil and Colombia accept the invitation to observe the elections scheduled for July 28th.

”I ask Colombia and Brazil to reconsider. Do not echo the policies of extremism on one side or the other. Because here are those who benefit from the country remaining closed, on one side and the other”, said Ecarri, from the Aliança do Lápis party.

The statements were made by the candidate upon leaving a meeting at the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela.

Invited by the organization, the TSE informed last Thursday (30) that it will not monitor the elections in Venezuela.

Colombia made the same decision. According to the country’s chancellor, Gilberto Murillo, the government did not have time to structure a team with the technical characteristics necessary to send a mission.

At the meeting with the CNE, Ecarri asked the organization to reconsider the decision to withdraw the invitation for the European Union to observe the election. “One day they say that the European Union is going to invade, that they are violating sovereignty, and the next they ask them to come and invest in Venezuela. So we need to end this schizophrenic relationship with the international community”, he complained.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado also claims that the CNE is in time to correct itself about the withdrawal of the invitation to the EU, a measure that she calls “incomprehensible”.

She also stated that “Colombia, Brazil and other countries in the region have a great opportunity and a great responsibility, because the outcome of this process will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the reality of these countries, due to migration, political stability, we all know” .

Ecarri also proposes that the country institute presidential debates “as occurs in all civilized countries in the world”.

“Even in places where polarization is extreme, such as Argentina and Brazil, there was also debate. We here have to overcome the politics of shouting because this country can’t take it anymore,” he concluded.
