Former Defense Minister and member of Israel's war cabinet, Benny Gantz, is demanding that the Israeli government establish a plan for the war against Hamas by June 8.
Speaking in the city of Ramat Gan this Saturday (18), Gantz warned that if his demands are not met, he will leave the government.
Gantz said the plan should include: eliminating Hamas, bringing back the hostages, establishing an alternative government in the Gaza Strip, bringing back Israeli residents to northern Israel and establishing a plan to make progress toward normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia.
The opposition leader said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must choose between “victory or disaster.”
“If (Netanyahu) chooses to lead the nation into the abyss, we will withdraw from the government, turn to the people and form an administration that can bring real victory,” Gantz said.
Gantz defended Israel's military operations in Rafah, calling the city a “gateway” to the resurgence of Hamas. The opposition leader said that to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians, Hamas cannot remain in Gaza and must be withdrawn from Rafah.
He acknowledged the damaging impact the war is having on civilians, but insisted that “determination” is needed.
“No one is happy here seeing civilians moving from one place to another. Nobody is happy with the destruction that is there. But after almost 20 years of Hamas controlling the area and building the most sophisticated operational infrastructure in Gaza, there is no shortcut,” he said.
