Late last month, Cawthorn was cited for carrying a loaded weapon through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at Charlotte Airport.
And in February 2021, agents at Asheville Regional Airport found an unloaded gun and a magazine in Cawthorn’s carry-on bag.
A spokesperson for Cawthorn told the Asheville Citizen-Times, when the paper ran a story about the incident in July 2021, that the congressman had brought the gun “by mistake.” Cawthorn was not charged.
In March, Cawthorn caused an uproar after claiming on a podcast that people in Washington had invited him to participate in orgies and had used cocaine in front of him.
The episode prompted members of his own party to consider endorsing one of their main opponents, according to several sources familiar with the discussions at the time, amid growing concerns that the North Carolina Republican was dragging the party down with his problematic behavior.
Senator Thom Tillis threw his weight behind State Senator Chuck Edwards in his primary against Cawthorn.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, amid complaints from members after Cawthorn’s allegations, told the freshman lawmaker that he needed to act together or he could face internal consequences, also saying that Cawthorn admitted the allegations were false.
“He needs to make do,” McCarthy told reporters at the time. “I just told him he’s lost my trust, and he’s going to have to win it back. I exposed everything that I think is inappropriate… He has a lot of upset members. You can’t just make statements out there.”
THE CNN reported the same month that Cawthorn was facing charges of driving with a revoked driver’s license — the second time in the past five years he has faced such a charge.
He also attracted negative headlines when a video appeared in which he referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “thug” and said the Ukrainian government was “incredibly bad”.
In 2021, the CNN reported a series of sexual misconduct allegations made against Cawthorn by women who said he behaved inappropriately towards them during his college years. Cawthorn denied any wrongdoing.
