Opposition says it will propose new impeachment against South Korean president

South Korea’s opposition Democratic Party said this Saturday (7) that it will propose a new impeachment request against President Yoon Suk Yeol, next Wednesday (11). The objective is for the proposal to be put to a vote on Saturday (14), reported the local news agency, Yonhap News.

The announcement was made after the voting session in the South Korean parliament, which took place this Saturday, denying the opening of Yoon’s impeachment process.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s ruling party chief Han Dong-hoon declared that the party and the president will work together to seek an orderly path for Yoon to step down, as he has effectively agreed to the plan.

Calls for impeachment and resignation have been made since Tuesday (3), both by the opposition and some members of the party itself, after the president declared Martial Law in the country.

According to him, the objective was to protect the country from North Korean communist forces. A few hours later, parliament voted to overturn the decree, and Yoon Suk Yeol was forced to back down.

Earlier during the session, Yoon’s party opposed the impeachment vote and a special prosecutor’s investigation bill into the first lady, local outlet Yonhap News reported.

To be approved, the request needed the support of at least two-thirds of the 300 parliamentarians.

The opposition does not have enough parliamentarians to approve the opening of the process and would need at least eight members of the ruling party to gain support for the motion.
