Oprah Winfrey reveals why she didn't act in the adaptation of “The Color Purple”

Oprah Winfrey revealed the reason for not acting in the new musical “The Color Purple”. The actress and presenter was part of the cast of the original version of the story, released in 1985, and is a producer of the 2024 adaptation.

Playing Sofia in “The Color Purple”, Oprah Winfrey said, in an interview with the website The Hollywood Reporter published on Thursday (28), that he thought about making a special appearance in the new film. However, he ended up deciding that this would be a “distraction” for actress Danielle Brooks, the character’s new interpreter.

“It would have been nice in the church scene,” Winfrey said, “But I thought it would also be a distraction when Sofia got married, if the original Sofia was simply one of the people in the church.”

There were also other obstacles to Oprah Winfrey appearing in the film. “They were filming this in the middle of Georgia when COVID was spreading. Like, 'OK, well, anyway, I'm not going to sit in that church all day,'” she told the outlet.

Oprah Winfrey is a producer of the new film along with Steven Spielberg, who directed the original 1985 film. The production is based on the book of the same name by Alice Walker, released in 1982.

Oprah Winfrey was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category for the film. The award, however, went to Angelica Houston, for her role in “The Honor of the Mighty Prizzi”.

The cast of the new production of “The Color Purple” includes names like Halle Bailey, HER, Ciara and Taraji P. Henson. The musical hits Brazilian cinemas on January 4, 2024.
