Orange December: learn how to identify the possible signs of skin cancer

The Orange December campaign encourages awareness about skin cancer prevention throughout the month.

THE CNN Radio in Correspondente Médico, Rodrigo Munhoz, an oncologist specialized in Skin Cancer and Sarcoma at Hospital Sírio-Libanês de São Paulo, explained how to identify cases that deserve medical investigation.

According to him, the “ABCDE” demonstrates the warning signs that must be observed:

THE: Asymmetry, when a stain or mole has one side different from the other

B: jagged edges

Ç: Coloring (if it is dark or has more than one shade)

D: Dimension (when there is more than 6 millimeters, it deserves concern)

AND: Evolution or elevation (spots that are growing)

Munhoz recalls that there are two major groups of skin cancers: melanoma, which tends to be more aggressive and represents between 5 and 10% of cases, and the other 90%, which are non-melanomas, with a favorable evolution and curable “if treated correctly.”

At the same time, he stated that the chances of curing even melanoma are “equally high”, as long as there is “early diagnosis.”

According to the oncologist, melanoma usually evolves faster and has a greater chance of metastasis.

“The skin is the largest organ of the body, any sign that draws attention should be evaluated by a qualified dermatologist”, he warned.

The expert reinforced the importance of using sunscreen, especially those who have continuous exposure, and observing possible changes in the skin.
