Orban nominates female minister known for anti-LGBT positions as Hungarian president

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has nominated a female government minister known for his stance against expanding the rights of the LGTB community, a year before the ambiguous – as expected – parliamentary elections in the Central European country.

The head of the Hungarian government said that he will propose to the parliament of the country the election of the current Minister of Family Affairs Katalin Novak, in order to replace, as head of state, Janos Ander, when his last five-year term ends in 2022, according to the agency. Bloomberg.

The presidency of Hungary is largely ritualistic and is elected by Parliament, in which the right-wing Fidesz-Christian Democratic People’s Party has a majority of more than two-thirds, with 133 of the 199 seats.

Novak’s election as President of Hungary points to Orban’s main lines of defense in his bid to defeat the united opposition coalition in 2022 and secure a fourth consecutive term as prime minister.

In addition to unprecedented campaign spending, the Hungarian leader has campaigned for traditional family values and a conservative “crusade” against the rights of the LGBT community to secure the votes of politically conservative citizens.

The nominee for President of Hungary, Mr. Novak, has spearheaded benefits for traditional families and has spoken out against the non-traditional definition of gender, as well as the ability of same-sex couples to adopt children.

The responsibilities of the president include the appointment of a prime minister after the parliamentary elections, the ratification or veto of bills passed by parliament, and the appointment of the country’s attorney general.
