The movie “The 33” launched in 2015 and starring Antonio Banderas, Juliette Binoche and Brazilian Rodrigo Santoro, tells the Royal history of a group of 33 miners who were buried after an accident at Mina San José, Chile, in 2010.
The miners stayed 69 days under the ground and the story was accompanied by all over the world, which watched live the scenes of the rescue that managed to remove all men from the underground alive.
Remember the case of Chilean miners who inspired the movie “The 33”
The accident at Mina San Jose, which is located in the Atacama Desert Region, took place on the afternoon of August 5, 2010. A collapse caused the only tunnel used in the mine, which was entry and exit for workers, blocked, leaving 33 miners (32 Chileans and a Bolivian) prisoners under the ground.
The trapped miners took refuge in an area on the side of the tunnel, about 50 square meters, and more than 700 meters deep. The rock that blocked the passage was impossible to remove or broken due to its size and composition, and a second collapse caused the ventilation tubes to be impaired as well.
Relatives of the miners set up a camp next to the mine, demanding the rescue of workers – a mission that was assumed by the Chilean government and then Chilean minister, Laurence Goldborne.

Several drilling probes were used to dig the site and try to find some sign of the miners. Just 17 days after the accident, one of these probes managed to get close to the refuge where they were and the workers attached a ticket to the machine, which said: “We are well in the refuge 33”.
With the renewed hopes, the teams began to send groceries, medications and oxygen to the miners as they planned how the ransom would be done, as it would be necessary to drill a tunnel large enough for men to leave. Under the ground, the miners also began to record videos with testimonials of how they had survived and how they were living in this period.
Only on October 12, 69 days after the accident, the miners began to be rescued through a capsule, which behaved one man at a time. The rescue operation lasted almost a full day, until the 33 miners were back on the surface.
