Oscar 2021, all the nominations: from “Nomadland” to “Mank” (and Laura Pausini)

A ceremony like never before. The promise to make history, to show inclusion and integration. The Oscars, which the United States will award on Sunday 25 April, with a direct hybrid, staged between different locations in Los Angeles, have brought with them various hopes. For the first time, two women received a nomination for best director, being guaranteed the possibility to change, forever, the film industry. Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell, who last year directed, respectively, Nomadland e Promising young woman, they are the sixth and seventh women to have been given a chance in the most coveted competition.

E i Golden Globes, dove Nomadland has won the favor of critics, they seem to have given them a good chance of victory.

Zhao, who at the 2021 Oscars, will present himself with a total of four nominations, a record figure for a woman, will compete among the favorites, clashing with Mank, the most nominated of the films. The Netflix film garnered a total of ten nominations, leading the platform to dominate the Oscar race, with thirty-five overall nominations. The big comeback of streaming, however, could be held back by Threatening, directed by the Korean Lee Isaac Chung. The title, the first to reopen Italian cinemas, was so successful – with audiences and critics – that it substantiated the idea of a possible victory. But making predictions, in the most sudden and improvised edition of the Oscars, is not easy. Especially for Italy, which Covid-19 has prevented from seeing most of the films in the competition. The hope, to date, is that the country can make up for it with Laura Pausini, competing for the best original song.
