Oscar 2022: honorary ceremony postponed by omicron advancement

The advancement of the Ômicron variant of Covid-19 in the United States led the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to opt for the postponement of the honorary gala event that celebrates the trajectory of outstanding actors. The award, which would take place on January 15th, does not yet have a new date set to take place.

“We made the difficult decision to change our plans to celebrate the face-to-face gala of the Board of Governors awards on January 15th. Given the uncertainties surrounding the variants [do coronavírus] and the impact they could have on our community, we think this was the best and safest decision to make for our guests and honorees. Rescheduling plans will come at a future date as we continue to prioritize the health and well-being of everyone involved” declared the Academy in a statement.

The 12th edition of the event will honor veteran actors Samuel L. Jackson, Danny Glover, Liv Ullman and actress and director Elaine May. The ceremony traditionally precedes the big Oscar awards night, which this year is scheduled for March 27. In 2020, the honorary event was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Academy Awards ceremony took place in person in April.

This week, the United States recorded the first death from the coronavirus variant. Omicron has already become the dominant strain in the United States and is related to 73% of reported cases of the disease in the last week. California is the state with the fewest cases of Covid-19 in the country and also leads the vaccination rates in the United States. Even so, there was a relevant increase in the number of suspected cases in recent days, which led to the postponement
