Oscar 2022, Troy Kotsur and the applause in sign language that conquers everyone

Troy Kotsur won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the film Coda – The signs of the heart. He is the second deaf actor to win the statuette, the first being Marlee Matlin, awarded in 1986 for Sons of a lesser god and now co-star of the same Queue.

The actor, visibly very excited, was greeted on stage by a flood of hands raised in motion, which indicates applause in sign language. And then he dedicated the statuette to the deaf community, to the Coda community (children of deaf adults) and to all people with disabilities: “This is our moment”, he said. And again: “I really want to thank all the wonderful theatrical stages for the deaf in which I was allowed to go up, there I was given the opportunity to develop my profession as an actor”. In the film he plays Frank Rossi, a fisherman in difficulty struggling with the dreams of his daughter who would like to leave the family – to which he interprets, as she is the only hearing one – to try the path of the world of singing, a great passion her.

THE OSCARS® The 94th Oscars® aired live Sunday March 27, from the Dolby® Theater at Ovation Hollywood at 8 pm EDT / 5 pm PDT on ABC in more than 200 territories worldwide. (ABC via Getty Images) TROY KOTSUR, YUH-JUNG-YOUNABC

Kotsur, 53, thanked his wife and 16-year-old daughter Kyra, as well as paying homage to his father, whom he called “the best in sign language”. Then, he continued, “He had a car accident and was paralyzed from the neck down and was unable to express himself with signs. Dad, I learned so much from you. I will Always Love You. You are my hero“.
