Oscar 2023, Nostalgia for Martone out of the shortlist

The chance for Italy to win the Oscar has vanished at Best International Film 2023, a category that includes titles that are not filmed for at least half of the dialogue in English and that are produced outside the United States.

Mario Martone, Italian candidate, was not included in the shortlist of the category: the director was a candidate for Nostalgiathe drama shot in Naples with Pierfrancesco Favino. The story, presented at Cannes Film Festival, is based on the homonymous novel by Ermanno Rea (Feltrinelli). In short, a great disappointment for those who hoped that he would take over the baton of Paolo Sorrentino, who triumphed with The great beauty in 2014.

Here, however, the rose of 15 foreign projects that have passed the first selections to the prestigious recognition: All quiet on the western front (Germany), Argentina, 1985 (Argentina), Bardo by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Mexico), Cairo conspiracy (Sweden), The blue caftan (Morocco), Close (Belgium), The Empress Corset – Corsage (Austria), Decision to leave (South Korea), EO (Poland) with Lorenzo Zurzolo, Holy spider (Denmark), Joyland (Pakistan), Last film show (India), The quiet girl (Ireland), Return to Seoul ( Cambodia) and Saint Omer (France).

In the short list of live action shorts, however, the tick Alice Rohrwacher with Pupilsproduced by Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón and financed by Walt Disney.
