The indications for “I’m Still Here” by director Walter Salles, and actress Fernanda Torres to the Oscars 2025 were not only news in Brazil. THE international press also reported the presence of Brazilians at the biggest film awards in the world.
In addition to becoming the first Brazilian feature film nominated for Best Film at the Oscars, “I’m Still Here” also competes for Best Foreign Film and Best Actress, for Fernanda Torres’ performance.
The most respected film and entertainment websites in the world reported on the Brazilian nominations and even highlighted the fact that Torres was competing for the award 26 years after her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, was nominated in the same category for “Central do Brasil”, also directed by Salles.
THE Variety – who had already opted for the three nominations for “I’m Still Here” – highlighted the support of Brazilian fans on social media and classified the film’s nomination for Best Film as one of this year’s surprises.
“As Academy voters followed the Brazilian drama, a wave of support from vocal fans unfolded on social media. Now, ‘I’m Still Here’ is one of the few foreign-language films to get an above-the-line nomination at the Oscars,” the publication wrote. “Despite strong support for Fernanda Torres and a clear nomination for best international feature film, ‘I’m Still Here’ was not widely expected to be nominated for best film.”
The vehicle The Hollywood Reporter published a story just to highlight the fact that Torres received her nomination more than 25 years after her mother was nominated.
“Fernanda Torres’ mother you must be very proud”, says the beginning of the text. “The star of Walter Salles’ period drama, ‘I’m Still Here’, repeated the historic feat of her mother Fernanda Montenegro in 1999 (for ‘Central do Brasil’), becoming the second Brazilian to be nominated by the Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences in the best actress category.”
The newspaper The Washington Post also published a review praising Torres’ performance and his Oscar nomination.
“Torres has already won a Golden Globe for his performance and this Thursday he received an Oscar nomination; In his hands, Eunice is an ordinary (yet resourceful) woman who takes up the call to action out of love for her family and her country. Salles does not present this as something easy, but he presents it as something necessary”, says the text.
The portal Deadline also highlighted the fact that Fernanda Torres was the second Brazilian to receive a nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars, two decades after her mother.
“Torres is only the second Brazilian actress to receive an Oscar nomination. The first was his mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated in 1999 for ‘Central do Brasil’, also directed by Salles”, says the article.
Just like the New York Times who republished an article on her Instagram that highlights the mother and daughter, written in December.
“A quarter of a century ago, Fernanda Montenegro, now 95 years old, made history when she became the first Brazilian actress to be nominated for an Oscar. She lost to Gwyneth Paltrow, and Brazil never got over what it considered a snub,” says the article. “Now Ms. Torres, 59, is attracting buzz in Hollywood that could put her in line to win the elusive golden statuette for a role that ignited movie fever — and national recognition — in Latin America’s largest country. ”
THE ceremony of the 97th Academy Awards is scheduled for March 2 in Los Angeles, in the United States. See the full list of nominees.
