Oscar: Latin American countries have 8.4% of nominations and 4.4% of victories

THE Oscar It happens next Sunday (2) and the expectation is high for “I’m still here “. The Brazilian film directed by Walter Salles competes in the categories of Best Movie , Best International Film and Best actress for the performance of FERNANDA TORRES .

Although the awards have become more plural over the last few years, the great winners in the history of the awards are mostly Hollywood productions. It was only in 1956 that the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences began to give more space to movies outside the United States by recognizing the feature film “Samurai: The Dominant Warrior” with a honorary award at the 28th edition of the Award.

From 1957, then began the category focused only on international productions, named best movie in a foreign language. It was not until 2020 that the category changed for better international film because, according to the Academy Commission, it promotes a more inclusive view of productions made outside the United States.

In 2025, Brazil won its fifth nomination in the category. In 68 editions of the awards, the number reflects the little space not only of the country, but also of the entire region. According to analysis of CNN just 29 Latin American films were indicated in the category among the 344 nominations made between 1957 and 2025 . That number represents 8.43% of the total nominations .

When we look at the proportion of victories, the index is even lower. Just 4.41% of the best international film wins went to films made in Latin America with only 3 of 68 statuettes given in the category for the region.

For comparison, of the 10 countries with the most indications in better international film, eight are from Europe. Only Israel in the Middle East and Japan appear in this ranking in Asia outside the European axis.

The country with the most indications is France – which has 39 in total, ie 30 more than Mexico, which is the best placed country in Latin America. With nine nominations, the country got only one victory in 2019, with “Pomegranate “. The feature, just like “I’m still here”, also played better film – but, in this case, lost in 2019 to “Green Book: The Guide.”

Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma” was the fourth and latest Latin American film to win the category of best international film.

Latin America’s last nomination until “I’m still here” had been in 2023 by the Argentine feature “Argentina, 1985”. The film, like Walter Salles’s Brazilian feature, portrays the effects of the military dictatorship on its respective territory.
