The team behind Austria’s Oscar-nominated Empress Sisi film “Corsage” is in turmoil following the announcement that the actor playing Emperor Francis Joseph will be charged with possession of child pornography.
The public broadcaster ORF, which co-financed the film, “immediately ceases the production and distribution of films with Florian Teichtmeister,” according to the group’s website.
According to the ORF network, the Cineplexx cinema chain, which operates 400 cinemas in a dozen countries, also withdrew the film which was shown last year at the Cannes Film Festival.
However, the professional association of the film industry in Austria informed AFP that in consultation with the director and the producers, it maintains the nomination of the film “Corsage” at the Oscars.
A distinction must be made between the film and the actor’s conduct, says the association that selected the film to compete in the Best Foreign Film category.
On Friday, the lawyer for Florian Teichtmeister, 43, announced to the media the filing of charges against his client, who will plead guilty. His trial will be held on February 8.
He is accused of possession of child pornography material in a large quantity, at least during the period between February 2008 and August 2021. He faces a sentence of two years of deprivation of liberty.
In today’s announcement, the film’s producers state that the shooting took place before the first rumors were released, in the fall of 2021.
When asked about these rumors by the producers, the actor had “categorically” stated that they are false.
“In the meantime we have fully informed co-producers, distributors and commercial partners, financiers and sponsors, as well as the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,” the producers clarify.
A box office hit, the film has been screened at 70 festivals and won numerous awards. It has been bought by more than 90 countries.
Director and screenwriter Marie Kreutzer said she was saddened and outraged that a feminist film would be tarnished and destroyed to this extent by the horrific actions of one person.
The Burgtheater, the national theater of Austria, of which the actor is a member, announced his dismissal with immediate effect.
