The film “I’m Still Here”, by Walter Salles, was nominated this Thursday (23) for the Best International Film category at the 2025 Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the complete list of nominees in a live broadcast on its channel official YouTube show hosted by actors and comedians Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott.
The film starring Fernanda Torres is the fifth Brazilian production to compete for the Best International Film award, following “O Pagador de Promessas”, “O Quatrilho”, “O Que É Isso, Companheiro?” and “Central do Brasil”. No film submitted by Brazil ever won the category.
The country that leads the list of champions in the category is Italy, where the film responsible for Brazil’s last defeat at the Oscars came from. “Central do Brasil”, starring Fernanda Montenegro, was passed over for “A Vida É Bela”, by Roberto Benigni. The Italians have, in total, 14 feature films awarded as Best International Film. Among them, “Noites de Cabíria”, “Cinema Paradiso” and “O Jardim dos Finzi-Contini” stand out.
France, with 12 statuettes, and Japan, with 5, complete the podium. The French shone with films like “Black Orpheus” – which, in fact, stars Brazilians – and “Madame Rosa, a Vida à Sua Frente”.
