Oscars 2022 faces turning point to boost ratings

Three female comedians will share the role of presenter, fans will choose two awards and some speeches will be recorded before the live broadcast.

This is part of the plan to shake up the transmission of the Oscar this year, which faces a crucial test on Sunday as it tries to bounce back from last year’s low ratings.

After being without a host since 2019, the most recent Oscars bring in three: comedians Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes. It is the first time that a female trio will present the ceremony, each bringing their own sense of humor.

“We’re already starting with three vaginas,” Hall said in an interview. “I think three women on stage already stand out, so I think we’re off to a really good start.”

The star of “The Breakaway,” Schumer described her style as “mean” and said she was ready to tease front-row audiences. “That’s why we’re here, just so we can play against each other,” she joked in a video released by ABC.

At the same time, producer Will Packer promises that the 94th Academy Awards will celebrate films around the “Movie Lovers Unite” theme. Some presenters, including skateboarder Tony Hawk and rapper Sean Combs, come from outside the film industry, a sign that the show isn’t just for moviegoers.

In its heyday, the Oscars reigned as a must-see TV show — more than 55 million U.S. viewers watched the megahit “Titanic” win the awards in 1998.

Last year, when the Covid-19 pandemic prompted organizers to move the ceremony to a train station with a limited audience and no musical performances, viewership dropped to 10.4 million on ABC, which has rights to broadcast the event until 2028
