As we enter the era of 5G and the ultra-high speeds offered by Fiber To The Home – FTTH, OTE and its subsidiary OTEGLOBE are upgrading their telecommunications infrastructure.
As competent sources in Capital.gr explain The main goal of the group is to prepare for the explosion of the data transfer volume that is expected in the coming years due to the increased use of the internet for work, education and entertainment, as well as the new applications that are being designed.
We got a first taste of this increase in recent years. During the pandemic, this movement increased by 30% -40% per year, with the implementation of telework and distance education.
The upward trend is expected not only to continue but also to intensify, as in the coming years new technological applications will be developed (telemedicine, autonomous driving, etc.), more companies and organizations will transfer their work to the cloud, while the forms of entertainment such as Netflix.
Only virtual reality technologies that all tech giants like Meta (Facebook), Alphabet (Google), Amazon, etc. are working on will increase data traffic to support what we call “metaverse”.
In this context, OTE proceeded to increase the capacity of the backbone networks managed by OTEGLOBE, quadrupling the communication speed from 100Gbps to 400Gbps.
This technology is used for the first time in Greece and will be utilized by COSMOTE for the interconnections in the backbone network within the country, as the OTE group expands the fiber optic network to the house, while it will proceed with the upgrade of the remaining connections within 2022.
However, the upgrade of the telecommunications infrastructure also strengthens the position of OTEGLOBE, which provides international wholesale telecommunications services to both telecommunications providers and multinational companies in the wider region of SE Europe.
The OTE Group subsidiary operates a network based on leased fiber optics with a total length of over 21,000 kilometers that connects the largest telecommunications centers in Europe with more than four distinct routes.
In addition to the terrestrial fiber optic network, OTEGLOBE participates in the Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) submarine cable consortium, with a total length of over 25,000 kilometers that connects Asia, the Middle East and Africa with Europe.
In 2020, OTEGLOBE’s turnover amounted to 346.4 million euros and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) amounted to 24.3 million euros.
