To the sound of the British national anthem, a newspaper in the United Kingdom declared this Thursday (20) a lettuce as the winner in a contest to see if she could outlast Liz Truss in office after the prime minister’s resignation.
The Daily Star tabloid went live on Friday showing the vegetable alongside a photo of Truss, asking readers, “Which wet lettuce will last the longest?”
He later expanded the picture, adding a wig, a face and hands clinging to the vegetable, as well as two British flags, a pastel on a plate and a red mug with the caption “Keep Calm and Carry On”, a slogan used to elevate morale in the UK during World War II.
More than 12,000 Twitter users were watching the broadcast when Truss announced her resignation outside the prime minister’s official Downing Street residence.
Moments later, when the number of spectators reached 21,000, the anthem “God Save the King” sounded as a hand reached across the table and placed Truss’s photo with her back to the camera and the caption “lettuce lasted longer than Liz”. Truss” appeared.
Appointed on Sept. 6, Truss succumbed to mounting pressure after being forced to dismiss her finance minister and closest political ally, Kwasi Kwarteng, following a disastrously received economic package that rocked financial markets.
