Outbreak of the Omicron mutation in Britain

It is true that Britain is currently in a constant race between the Omicron mutation and vaccinations. The epidemiological situation in the country has worsened in just 24 hours, with the estimates of the Public Health Organization talking about even 200,000 cases of the new mutation.

In fact, Health Minister Sanjit Javad confirmed that 20% of cases in England are infected with the Omicron mutation, and while this percentage in London reaches 44%, he warned that the dominant mutation could take place within the next 24 hours.

Unbearable pressure on the NHS

The National Health System (NHS) has sounded the alarm with almost 96% occupancy. It is characteristic of the situation that the heads of the system have already started transferring patients to hotels, while British national health personnel from Greece and Spain have been called to return in order to strengthen the NHS.

The shortage of staff is so great that it has created a problem even in the process of leaving. It is estimated that last week about 10,000 healthy patients remained in the hospital due to the inability of the system to proceed with the procedure.

At the same time, and while Boris Johnson has described the mutation as a “tidal wave”, he called on volunteers and members of the military to help with the vaccination program.

Even so, the huge influx of people for a booster dose created long queues outside the vaccination centers, while the website for appointments “fell” due to the volume of requests. However, the ambitious goal of the Prime Minister, so that everyone over the age of 18 to take the commemorative dose by December 31, has almost been rejected, by the already burdened health system.

“Guerrillas” cause Johnson a headache

In this climate, Boris Johnson will have to face “rebels” of his party this afternoon, who have made it clear that they will not vote for the implementation of the new stricter measures of the pandemic. These include the application of vaccination passports at large social events, the promotion of work from home and the expansion of the use of the mask. This is the biggest “leak” under Prime Minister Johnson with about 70-80 MPs opposing the plans of their government. Now Johnson will have to turn to a vote of confidence in the rival Labor Party.
