The number of Armenians who have left has exceeded 100,000 Nagorno Karabakhas Nazeli Baghdasarian, representative of the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, said on Saturday.
According to official figures, about 120,000 Armenians lived in the enclave before its recapture by Azerbaijan last week after a military operation blitz.
The head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) pointed out late last Friday night that more than 100,000 refugees have arrived in Armenia from Nagorno Karabakh.
“Many are hungry, exhausted and in need of immediate help”said Filippo Grandi. “UNHCR and other humanitarian partners are increasing their support to the Armenian authorities, but there is an urgent need for international assistance”he underlined.
In the pouch “a few hundred civil servants, rescuers, volunteers and people with special needs remain, who are also preparing to leave”former Nagorno-Karabakh ombudsman Artak Beglarian wrote on Platform X, clarifying however that this is not “official” information.
Moreover the UN has announced that it will send a mission to Nagorno-Karabakh this weekendmainly to assess humanitarian needs, while the international organization has not had access to the enclave for “almost 30 years”.
On Thursday, the self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno-Karabakh announced its self-dissolution as well as the dissolution of all its institutions as of January 1, 2024.
In a few days more than 80% of the Armenian population fled their homes in fear of reprisals from Azerbaijan, burning their personal belongings before making their way to Armenia.
