It was sold to a British man panel by a 15th-century Italian painter, Philippine Lippi for 5 255,000 (approximately $ 317,500) at an auction at Dawsons Auctioneers in the United Kingdom.
The news, according to an article in The Independent, quoted by the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, is that the family who sold the painting had no idea it was a valuable painting.
“The Depiction of the Madonna and Child” belonged to a 90-year-old woman who left Italy at an early age, moved to Britain and is now in a dementia nursing home. The painting, given to her by her father 30 years ago, was hung in her uninhabited house.
The oil painting on canvas, 50 cm x 43.5 cm depicts the Virgin Mary with the Divine Infant with accompanying angels, in a landscape. More than 20 collectors from around the world submitted bids.
Auctioneer Peter Maison said: “We had over 20 active bidders a day, but when we reached .000 100,000 there were only two left. “We knew it would go well, but the final price exceeded our expectationsHe added.

The painting was found at home by auctioneer Siobhan Tyrrell, who participates in the BBC show Antiques Roadshow. In the TV program antique appraisers and works of art travel to the UK and find valuables.

“I am not an expert in painting, however as a general appraiser with over 25 years of experience, I recognized that it was an excellent work of the 16th century. “I immediately told the family about its possible high value and they wanted me to take it to be included in the art auction,” he said.
Born in Italy in 1457, Lippi was a student of Botticelli. His fame spread throughout Italy and he painted important series of murals in Rome and Florence. He was also a famous altar painter.
