Over 400,000 people flee their homes in China as super typhoon Yagi approaches

Authorities on southern China’s Hainan Island have already evacuated more than 419,000 residents as a precaution as super typhoon Yagi approaches, China’s official Xinhua news agency reported today. China is bracing for what could be the most powerful tropical storm to hit its southern coast in a decade. The typhoon is expected to make landfall this afternoon on the coast of Hainan, a popular tourist destination, according to the province’s weather service. The Ministry of Water Resources yesterday upgraded to the third highest level the emergency response mechanism put in place to deal with floods in Hainan province and neighboring Guangdong. “Yagi is likely to be the strongest typhoon to hit China’s southern coast since 2014, which will make flood prevention work very difficult,” Xinhua reported after a meeting of flood officials.
