Over sixty police officers were injured in Berlin during a new pro-Palestinian demonstration which got out of control overnight Wednesday into Thursday with authorities concerned about the rise of these types of gatherings.
The police officers were “injured by stones, flammable liquids and acts of riot”, the Berlin police underlined this morning on the X social network.
In total “65 police officers were injured”, while “174 people were arrested, 65 of whom are the subject of a criminal investigation” at the end of that rally, police told AFP.
Also injured were people “not involved” as well as others who “resisted” law enforcement forces, according to the police, who did not release relevant information.
The rally started last night in the working-class district of Neukölln, home to a large community of people from Arab countries.
Police told the participants to “disperse” and they then “placed trash cans and roadblocks,” while “rocks and Molotov cocktails were thrown at the police,” who responded with water cannons, according to authorities.
Following the outbreak of violence in the Middle East, many demonstrations, marred by incidents, have been organized in major German cities in support of the Palestinians.
A synagogue was hit by Molotov cocktails in Berlin overnight, but no damage or injuries were reported.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz this morning called on the authorities to prevent demonstrations that threaten to turn into anti-Semitic gatherings.
“Anti-Semitism has no place in Germany (…) the rules must be applied, the authorities must not allow gatherings where crimes are threatened, where there is a fear that anti-Semitic slogans will be heard, where the death of people is glorified (…) they must we are stable,” Soltz declared before the Parliament.
