Over 7 million people are at risk of acute food insecurity in South Sudan

More than 7 million South Sudanese are at risk of acute food insecurity, with 79,000 thousands facing “catastrophic” levels equivalent to famine. “An estimated 7.1 million people are likely to experience high levels of acute food insecurity” by July 2024, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted in the release. Of these, “79,000 people are at risk of facing a catastrophic level,” the fifth on the Integrated Food Security Framework (IPC) scale, “mainly in areas affected by climate shocks, economic crisis and conflict,” OCHA added.
