Over the year, computers in Russia have risen in price by 20%. And will continue to rise in price

As the newspaper “Vedomosti” writes with reference to electronics sellers, over the past year, computers in Russia have risen in price by at least 20%, and only in the first quarter of this year – by 10-12%. This applies to both laptops and desktops.

Over the year, computers in Russia have risen in price by 20%. And will continue to rise in price

According to the report of the analytical company GfK, for the incomplete first quarter of this year, the average cost of a computer in Russian retail was about 54,000 rubles, which is 20% more than a year ago, and 12% more compared to the fourth quarter of 2020.

There are several reasons for the rise in prices for computers. The main one is the lack of components. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, some component manufacturers stopped their factories or completely ceased to exist, at the same time, at the beginning of 2021, the demand for laptops and desktop PCs grew and exceeded supply, which is why the situation with the shortage of components only worsened. … Natalya Selikhova, Head of Computers and Laptops at Ozon, comments on the situation as follows: “There were not enough processors, screens and video cards. Now the supply situation is slightly normalizing, but there is still a shortage of chips. “.

The demand for equipment also raised the demand for container transportation, which inevitably affected the price: according to the Association of Retailers, the price of container transportation of goods from China and Southeast Asia in January this year increased almost five times compared to October 2020 … Due to the shortage of containers, their cost has increased significantly.

Finally, the third reason for the rise in prices is the rapid growth of cryptocurrency quotes, as a result of which many rushed to buy video cards for mining Bitcoin, Etherium and others. Naturally, the cost of video cards has jumped 2-3 times and, judging by the latest data, will continue to rise. And since a video card is almost an indispensable component of a computer, the cost of a PC also rises.

«In the next two quarters, prices are expected to rise in almost all categories of electronics, – forecasts Nikolay Petrov, head of the digital technology purchasing group at Cityink. – In the segment of computer technology, this is due to a shortage and an increase in the cost of components, as well as an increase in the cost of container transportation.».

Dmitry Kravchenko, the general director of Acer in Russia, notes that at the moment there are no fundamental reasons for reducing prices: the shortage of components in the computer market still persists and it is unlikely that it will be possible to overcome it until the third quarter of this year. Analysts from other countries agree on this opinion. However, there are those who predict a shortage of components until 2022.
