Over the year, spending on cloud infrastructure grew by 9.4%, while spending on other infrastructure decreased by 8.3%

Experts of the analytical company IDC summed up the results of the third quarter of last year in the IT infrastructure market. According to their calculations, revenues from the sale of components of the cloud infrastructure (it includes servers, storage and Ethernet switches in IDC) in annual terms grew by 9.4%. At the same time, spending on “traditional” infrastructure not related to cloud services fell by 8.3%.

The metrics reflect the trend towards distance learning and work in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the important role that cloud infrastructure is playing in this transition, analysts said.

Public cloud infrastructure spending grew 13.1% year over year to $ 13.3 billion. In the previous quarter, public cloud infrastructure spending exceeded non-cloud infrastructure spending for the first time, but in the third quarter the latter was again higher. They amounted to $ 13.7 billion. Analysts predict public cloud infrastructure spending will soon jump ahead again. In terms of spending on private cloud infrastructure, they grew by only 0.6% over the year. However, in absolute terms, this is a huge segment, estimated at $ 5.0 billion.
