The Lower House or Bundestag now has 14 days to elect Mertz or other candidate Chancellor with an absolute majority. It could attempt a new vote already on Tuesday, according to the agency. Although it fails, the Constitution allows the president to appoint the candidate who will win the most votes as a chancellor or to dismantle Bundestag and hold new national elections, the Associated Press reports.
