Owner of kiosk where Congolese died in Rio will testify to police

The Civil Police expects to hear, this Tuesday (1st), the owner of the kiosk in Barra da Tijuca where the young Congolese Moïse Kabamgabe was killed last week. The testimony of the victim’s family is scheduled for this Wednesday (2). Eight people have already been heard, including a representative of the Congolese community who helped the police with information.

Agents from the Municipal Public Order Department (Seop) and the Municipal Guard were at the location this morning, but the Tropicália kiosk was closed.

The city hall informed that, if the participation or connivance of the concessionaire/owner is confirmed, the license and concession will be revoked.

The secretary of Finance and Planning of the municipality Pedro Paulo said that the inspection bodies will closely monitor to take the appropriate measures: “It is unacceptable that the most democratic space in this city can be granted to someone capable of such a brutal and inhuman act!” he concluded.

An employee at another establishment on the waterfront, who did not want to be identified, said that Moïse had been working daily at kiosks for just over three years. “He was quiet, we didn’t even know his name. We just called Angolan,” he said.

Fernand Umpapa, representative of the Congolese community, expressed his indignation at Moïse’s murder. “This was a case that shocked everyone, not just in the Congolese community, but anyone with sensitivity in the Brazilian community,” said Umpapa.

“If people see a dog being attacked in the street, they intervene to defend it. But the same does not happen when a person is attacked. This happened to Moïse, who was beaten on the beach, and nobody came to help him. This shocked all Congolese and Africans in Brazil, and I think it also shocked the black community in Brazil who are very moved by this situation.”

Governor Cláudio Castro and Mayor Eduardo Paes spoke about the case. “The murder of Congolese Moïse Kabamgabe will not go unpunished. The police are identifying the perpetrators of this barbarity. Let’s arrest these criminals and give an answer to the family and society. The Victim Assistance Secretariat will look for relatives to provide the necessary support”, wrote Castro.

“The murder of Moïse Kabamgabe is unacceptable and outrageous. I am sure that the police authorities will act with the priority and rigor necessary to bring us the necessary clarifications and punish those responsible. The city hall follows the case”; wrote Paes.
