Oxford can create a cardiology project at the INC, in the city of RJ

The National Institute of Cardiology (INC), one of the federal specialized health centers in Rio de Janeiro, is quoted to host a project for the future unit of the University of Oxford in the state. The partnership must be limited to the area of cardiology.

The information was confirmed by Brazilian researcher Sue Ann Clemens, leader of the project’s implementation, who visited the headquarters of the National Institute of Cardiology, in Laranjeiras, in the south of Rio de Janeiro.

The project is the result of an agreement between Oxford and the Ministry of Health, which will help fund the initiative. “This agreement with the Ministry of Health was very important, because we left a partnership more in the infectious field and entered into a global health agreement”, says the researcher.

Oxford Headquarters in Rio

The university in the United Kingdom, which developed one of the vaccines against Covid-19, should establish a headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, but the INC building will not be chosen, according to Clemens, and will receive only the project related to studies in cardiology.

Oxford is still looking for a headquarters in the city and aligns new partnerships, as it did with the University of Siena, in Italy, and the International Vaccine Institute of South Korea.

“We are looking for a headquarters that can accommodate well the people we are going to hire, but we have no preference for a specific location,” said Clemens.

The forecast is that the university’s Brazilian unit will start operating in 2022 and will offer master’s and doctoral scholarships, as well as courses in infectious diseases, clinical development and vaccinology.

Master’s and PhD courses are also planned in Brazil, in addition to initiatives for professional development.

“We want to bring professionals from all over the world who have knowledge of the market. We don’t want to stay in the niche, training professionals who only have the horizons of Brazil and Latin America”, concludes the researcher.
