OnePlus officially merged with Oppo last year, becoming the latter’s independent sub-brand. Both companies have also decided to merge the code base of their Android-based skins. It was also announced that a single OS will appear in the second half of 2022. But now, months later, plans have changed.
In an official announcement in the OnePlus community, brand CEO Pete Lau confirms that OxygenOS and ColorOS will remain independent. This decision is based on community feedback. At the same time, both shells, OxygenOS and ColorOS, will continue to use a single codebase.

The main reason for using a single codebase is to distribute updates faster. For now, Android 12 stable is only available for OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro.
Things will probably get better with the release of OxygenOS 13 later this year. Although OnePlus has not yet officially confirmed, the next version of OxygenOS will most likely be based on Android 13.
