Ozieri, little Gioele Putzu dies, but the town festival continues

A day of celebration on a football field, in the San Nicola neighborhood, in Ozieri, Sardinia. The little Joel Putzu, 10 years old, he was there playing, with his parents on the sidelines watching him. As you do on any Saturday. Nothing strange, nothing dangerous. Until the goal of the field is closed on little Gioele, who died.

An absurdity. And it would have been remembered in silence, with respect, as a sad news story if it were not for the fact that a whirlwind of controversy is being raised. As it happens, in fact, in Ozieri, in that town in Sardinia where everything happened, there were the celebrations for the Blessed Virgin of Remedywhich included, during the evening of Saturday 14 September, a great concert by Fedez.

Thousands of people arrived in the town, which had organized itself for the special occasion well in advance, with shuttle services and buses arriving from every part of the island.

And so the party is held anyway, despite the city mourning. Fedez, as scheduled, sang (and posted clips of the concert full of people on social media) and the mayor of Ozieri, Marco Peralta, interviewed by New Sardiniaexplained: «The loss of a young life is an immeasurable pain. Words are of little use. It is a time for silence, for respecting the pain of others and for reflection. Today our Community has been struck by an immense tragedy – said the mayor – : a little angel, Gioele, is no longer among us. Our thoughts go to the family who, at this moment, is experiencing the greatest pain one can feel: the loss of a child. The municipal administration gathers around the Family, who no longer has their little angel. Finally, it is necessary to point out that, given the large influx of people, the public safety bodies have deemed it necessary not to suspend the scheduled event for reasons of public order».

But the townspeople responded in kind: “They should have cancelled everything, people would have understood.”

A right decision? Cynical? Provident? Disrespectful? Meanwhile, the dust is rising on social media and today, September 15, the last day of the holiday, the celebrations are being scaled down.
