“On the need for a drastic review of the model of development and cohesion of the Greek islands as we move towards the Green Transition”, said the SYRIZA-PS MEP, Petros Kokkalis, in the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, during the discussion of the report “Cohesion Policies in EU islands “.
The MEP suggested that the usual challenges of the Greek islands become a “competitive incentive and model” for clean energy, biodiversity, a circular water economy and materials and sustainable food systems. Noting that the Greek islands in particular “are currently the subject of a very dangerous geopolitical review”, he stressed that the design of a modern European island policy could turn all those geographical, or climatic features of the islands, which are often obstacles, “into a lever of opportunity for their sustainable development “.
Mr. Kokkalis even asked the Commission “to take due account of the leading role they can play in the implementation of the European Green Agreement in the context of insularity”. In particular, he said that by adapting the island economy to the effects of the climate crisis, “islands as closed systems with limited natural resources, can be a model of digital and green transition to clean energy, biodiversity, cyclical economy in water and materials , but also sustainable food systems “.
The report entitled “Islands and Cohesion Policy: Current Situation and Future Challenges” describes the economic, social and environmental challenges facing the island regions and calls for additional budget funding and a range of actions to address the islands’ needs.
The report is currently being voted on by the chairman of the Regional Development Committee (REGI), Ounus Omarz (Left, France).
