P. Marinakis: To the hypocritical and dangerous tactics of SYRIZA, the government responds with seriousness and actions

The secretary of the ND Parliamentary Assembly, Pavlos Marinakis, accuses SYRIZA of “tactics of exploiting human suffering” and “deliberate lies and propaganda”, on the occasion, as he notes, of statements made by several senior opposition officials regarding the tragic news of brutal murders. In his post on Facebook, Mr. Marinakis asks three questions about the attitude of SYRIZA: If his proposal to tighten the legal framework is another communication firework, why when he was in the government instead of tightening it and as an alternative punishment he established temporary imprisonment and, finally, what were its actions to change the institutional framework and protect victims.

On the contrary, as the ND secretary states, the government of Mr. Mitsotakis has tightened the penalties, has 44 structures (counseling centers) and the SOS line 15900 operating 24 hours a day, while a new operational structure was created in ELAS to deal with of domestic violence.

Completing his post, Mr. Marinakis notes that in such “serious matters there is an imperative need for coordination, unity and actions” as “only in this way can they be dealt with and not through conscious lies and propaganda”.

The post of the secretary of the ND PE in detail:

“On the occasion of the tragic news of brutal murders, many officers of the official opposition appeared, faithful to their constant tactic of instrumentalizing human suffering, calling for a tightening of the legal framework.

I wonder:

– Given that, after the amendment of the Criminal Code effective from 12/11/2021 by the current Government, the only penalty for cold blooded homicide is life imprisonment, i.e. the ultimate punishment, what does the proposal to tighten the legal framework? Is it another communication firework?

– When they found themselves in power, instead of making the said “toughening” that they mention today, why did they establish, with the 11/6/2019 amendment of the Criminal Code, as an alternative punishment for the crime of homicide and temporary imprisonment (i.e. 10-15 years ) beyond the life sentence that was the only sentence until then and is valid today, after its latest amendment by the current Government?

– What actions did they take to “change the institutional framework” that they propose and protect the victims? Were femicides not committed in their days?

Against the above hypocritical and dangerous tactics, the Government responds with seriousness and actions:

– The Greek Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis tightened the penalties for this type of crime and not only for the crime of homicide.

– With the operation of 44 counseling centers of the network of structures of the General Secretariat of Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality that operate today, while during the days of the SYRIZA government only one was opened and one hostel was closed.

– The SOS 15900 telephone line provides psychosocial support to female victims of violence 24 hours a day.

– New operational structure of EL.AS. to address domestic violence.

It goes without saying that for such serious matters there is an imperative need for coordination, unity and action.

This is the only way they can be dealt with and not through conscious lies and propaganda.”
