The president of the Federal Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), rebutted the statements of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) about the National Congress, made during a visit to the settlement of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) in Paraná, this Saturday (19).
“A deformed, offensive and baseless statement, the result of the beginning of the electoral dispute that makes it “interesting” to speak ill of Parliament,” Pacheco said in a statement.
In a speech, Lula attacked the actions of the Chamber of Deputies. “Congress has never been as deformed as it is now, it has never been as anti-people as it is now, this is the worst Congress we have ever had in the history of Brazil,” said PT. “You elect a president, you think the president is going to govern, but the House is going to govern, buying deputies with a secret budget.”
Without specifying which statements he was referring to, the communiqué signed by Pacheco enumerates a series of actions taken by Congress. The senator mentioned the Social Security Reform, the Sanitation Framework, the new Foreign Exchange Law, among other proposals approved by parliamentarians in recent years.
“Although I respect and value criticism, it is important that they are truthful and with good intentions, since Brazil is tired of opportunistic speeches during the electoral period. I invite everyone to a minimum of union, respect, responsibility and, also, willingness to work”, added the president of the Senate.

Considering the recent speeches of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of the National Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), says:
“A deformed, offensive and baseless statement, the result of the beginning of the electoral dispute that makes it “interesting” to speak ill of Parliament.
This National Congress, which is the synthesis of the defects and qualities of a Brazil built by successive governments, delivered reforms that had been shelved for years.
Among them, the Social Security, the Sanitation Framework, the autonomy of the Central Bank, the new Exchange Law, the new Bankruptcy Law, the new Distributed Generation Law, the Gas Law, the capitalization of Eletrobras and other milestones of the electric system , in addition to the Railways Law, the Cabotage Law (BR do Mar) and the reform of the National Security Law.
The same Congress that, being the first in the world to operate through the remote system in the Covid-19 pandemic, approved emergency aid, Pronampe for small and micro-enterprises, solved the impasse of the precatories and defended with laws (and not just speech) , the vaccine to the Brazilian people.
The same Congress also took a strong stand in defense of democracy when anti-democratic outbursts haunted the Nation. And it was this same Congress that validated electronic voting machines by rejecting the idea of printed voting.
Never has the Senate been so engaged in the anti-racism agenda, as stated by Senator Paulo Paim, from the PT, a reference in this area. Likewise, this same Senate has never been so focused on the defense of women, with historical production and public recognition in this sense. The presidency of that same Senate has also never been so willing to receive representatives from the most diverse segments, such as the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT), members of unions from the most varied sectors, environmentalists, artists and athletes.
And this same Congress, in a week in which the characters of the elections will be busy with the “crisis” of the social network platform, will be focused on voting for the Tax Reform that corrects social, historical and remarkable injustices.
Although it respects and values criticisms, it is important that they are true and with good intentions, since Brazil is tired of opportunistic speeches during the electoral period. I invite everyone to a minimum of unity, respect, responsibility and, also, willingness to work”.
Rodrigo Pacheco
President of the National Congress
