Paint.NET received a major update 5.0. Already catching up with Photoshop

Since its release, Paint.NET has been constantly upgraded, but the changes were most often not very significant, and really major updates were extremely rare – for example, update 4.0 was introduced in 2014. However, the developer, apparently, decided to significantly transform the application and introduced a new major version 5.0.

One of the key innovations was expanded support for hardware acceleration (using a video card). It first appeared in version 4.0, but then it was used only when displaying the canvas on the screen. With update 4.1, its use cases have expanded a bit, it has become involved in several effects (mainly for blurring). Now there are many more use cases: hardware acceleration is applied in the layers and history windows, in the list of images at the top, when using a ruler, for adjusting curves with levels, and so on. This significantly improves performance and extends autonomy (in the case of a laptop).

Paint.NET still does not have a color management system (CMS), unlike the same Photoshop, Krita and GIMP – the developer plans to implement it in the future. However, version 5.0 brings this graphics editor closer to its more functional competitors – it became possible to apply a color profile. A separate function converts the image by applying sRGB and then removing the color profile metadata.

Another major innovation is a completely new plug-in system, the key feature of which is support for hardware-accelerated graphics rendering. It will also allow Effect plugins to be applied to all layers in an image, allowing them to access file metadata, and more. Support for old plugins has not disappeared, but new ones should only be developed for a fresh system.

Even in Paint.NET 5.0, pressure sensitivity (with a stylus), improved resizing, new adjustments with effects, and more – there are a lot of innovations, you can read about all of them in the official forum. Separately, it is worth noting that the application no longer supports Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1, and is now only available on x64 and ARM64 systems.
