Pakistan: 83 killed in bombing – Hopes fade for survivors in debris

The number of dead has reached 83 after the kamikaze bomber attack on an Islamic mosque inside the police headquarters in Peshawar, Pakistan, at noon prayer time. The injured amount to 57 according to Reuters.

Muhammad Asim Khan, a spokesman for Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital, told AFP that at least nine bodies had been recovered from the rubble of the mosque overnight. The roof of the place of worship and a wall collapsed due to the explosion.

Pakistan has been facing rapidly deteriorating security for months, especially after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021. After some years of relative calm, attacks have followed one another. They are mainly attributed to the Taliban Movement of Pakistan (TTP), the so-called Islamic State in Khorasan (ISIS) and separatist organizations of the Baloch, a minority that lives mainly in Balochistan province.
