Pakistan and Iran agree to expand cooperation after missile attacks

Pakistan and Iran said on Monday (29) that they respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity and resolved to expand security cooperation, intensifying efforts to restore ties after missile attacks by both sides carried out this month against which they said to be militant targets.

The foreign ministers of the two countries met in the Pakistani capital days after military tensions raised alarm about greater instability in the region since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.

Pakistan's Acting Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani, speaking at a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian, said the neighbors managed to quickly resolve misunderstandings.

The two countries also agreed to combat terrorism in their respective areas and alleviate each other's concerns, Jilani said.

Abdollahian said the two countries have a good understanding, adding that there have never been territorial differences or wars between Iran and Pakistan.

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi will visit Pakistan soon, Abdollahian added.

Tensions between the two countries increased following the missile attacks, with Pakistan withdrawing its ambassador in Tehran and not allowing his counterpart to return to Islamabad, as well as canceling all high-level diplomatic and commercial engagements.

But efforts were made quickly to lower the temperature, with envoys being asked to return to their posts and Abdollahian being invited for talks.

The two Muslim nations have a history of unstable relations, but the missile attacks were the most serious incidents in recent years.

Islamabad said it hit bases of the separatist Baloch Liberation Front and the Baloch Liberation Army, while Tehran said it hit militants from the Jaish al Adl (JAA) group.

The militant groups operate in an area that includes Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province and Iran's southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province. Both regions are restive, mineral-rich and largely undeveloped.

Iran said attacks on a border village on its territory killed nine people, including four children. Pakistan said the Iranian attack had killed two children.
