Pakistan: Close to 1,500 dead from devastating floods – Among them 530 children

The unknown floods that hit it Pakistan and have submerged a third of the country under water have caused the death of nearly 1,500 peopleaccording to today’s figures, as authorities step up efforts to provide aid to millions of people.

The floods caused by the record rainfall of the monsoon season and melting glaciers in northern Pakistan have affected 33 million people, out of a total population of 220 million, sweeping away homes, crops, livestock and causing severe damage to infrastructure.

In total 1,486 people have lost their lives, among them 530 childrenaccording to the National Disaster Management Agency, which released its first total tally since Sept. 9.

In recent weeks, authorities have erected levees to prevent floodwaters from invading key infrastructure such as power stations, as well as homes. At the same time, as APE-MPE reports, the breeders who stayed to save their animals are facing a new threat as they start to run out of animal feed.

The government of Pakistan and the UN estimate that the climate change is responsible for these unprecedented floods, after record temperatures during the summer.

391 mm of rain fell in Pakistan in July and August, vs 190% more water than the average of the previous thirty years. In the worst-hit province of Sindh, the figure reached 466%.

Flights from the United Arab Emirates and the United States carrying humanitarian aid arrived in the country today, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry announced.
