Pakistan’s foreign minister said today that he has summoned the US ambassador to explain after US President Joe Biden’s move to question the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear program.
In a speech on Thursday, Biden said Pakistan is “perhaps one of the most dangerous countries in the world” because it “has nuclear weapons without any coherence.”
Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said he was surprised by Biden’s comments.
“As far as the security issue of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons is concerned, we meet all the international requirements according to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency),” he said today at a press conference.
A copy of Biden’s speech was posted on the White House website.
Bhutto-Zardari commented that he did not believe the decision to recall the US ambassador would adversely affect relations with the US and said officials could address specific concerns Washington may have about Pakistan’s nuclear program.
Relations between Pakistan and the US, once close allies, have only just begun to warm up after several years of estrangement, largely due to concern over Pakistan’s alleged support for the Afghan Taliban, which the US denies. Islamabad.
According to the Pakistani Foreign Minister, during his recent visit to Washington where he had extensive meetings, including at the State Department, no issue of concern was raised about his country’s nuclear program.
